Aleatico

Aleatico

History
Its 'a vine remote cultivation, whose origin is debated. According to some authors, like Trinci (1738), it was introduced in Italy and especially in Puglia, by the Greeks. In support of this thesis, it is thought that the ancient name Liatico or Liatica could result from Liatiko greek grape, grown in Crete, but is quite different dall'Aleatico spread to Italy, or that the name derives from the greek iouliatico, which means "July", the month of its maturation. According to other scholars, as Gallesio (1839), the Liatica or Livatica Uva, would result from the propagation by seed of Muscat. Recent studies conducted by Crespan and Milani (2001) have shown that the Aleatico has a bond of direct kinship with the Moscato Bianco, from whom he inherited his unmistakable aroma.

Spread
Today Aleatico has spread especially in Tuscany and Puglia, mainly in Salento and in the province of Bari and is used for the production of DOC wines Aleatico di Puglia, Salice Salentino and Gioia del Colle.

The plant
The bunch is medium or medium-small, elongated, slightly loose or medium compact and equipped with a wing. The berry is medium in size and nodular, with a zest of blue, thick and very waxy. In Puglia the ripening period is rather premature.

Wine tasting
The Aleatico, in recent years, has undergone a remarkable rediscovery of its original characteristics and its quality: it is widely used for the production of sweet wines, velvety and full-bodied, often vinified from grapes dried on the vine. From fresh fermented grapes you get a ruby red wine with violet hues, very aromatic and fine, with notes of violet, red fruit and jam. The taste is intense, warm, soft, fragrant and persistent. It may be present, even in small percentage, in assemblies with other varieties.
