Hotel Il Giglio

Il Giglio open at the end of 19th century, as a coach house, where travelers could find a place to eat and sleep, and horses could rest after the steep climb to Montalcino.

This is the same era as the birth of the famous red wine Brunello di Montalcino, and probably thanks to that famous wine the Il Giglio grew very quickly.

At the beginning of the 1900s the Il Giglio became a Hotel Restaurant, the only one in the entire area, and in 1912 received a Gold Medal as one of the Best Hotel in Tuscany at the Viareggio Expo. Since then Il Giglio remained a point of reference for the town's life: its “Sala dei Fattori” was the place where most important business and exchanges occurred, and where wealthy people gathered.

Throughout the twentieth century, it has remained the focal point of town life. On 90's, maybe because of its uniqueness, Il Giglio had been through periods of light and shade when, in 1995, the Machetti family recognized its unique character and decided to take on its management and to recreate the building’s original dignity.

All furniture, materials (wrought iron, solid wood, travertine stone) used hundreds of years before have been restored and are now blended with modern comforts and current technology.

We put passion into managing this Hotel as a "large house", Montalcino provides the landscape and the atmosphere, the rest is up to you ...

Just a few steps from the main Piazza, in the heart of medieval Montalcino, the “Il Giglio” have just 12 rooms, each one with cast-iron bed frames, painted ceiling and travertine stone bathrooms in a harmonious blend of rustic Tuscan style and classical elegance. The breathtaking panorama through the windows contributes to create an atmosphere that can only be experienced, never described .

The Restaurant at Il Giglio offers just few tables, a big fireplace that burns for most of the year contributing to the warm atmosphere. Traditional Tuscan dishes are served in front of the gorgeous landscape overlooking the Montalcino countryside . Home made pasta, tasty vegetable soups, or roasted game and incredibly big Fiorentina steaks are the main part of the menù .

The Food Lover's Companion to Tuscany : This small, family-run Hotel is one of my Tuscan favorites, and its restaurant offers fine home cooking by Signora Anna and wonderful wines chosen by her husband, Mario...

As well as the a la carte menu based on typical Tuscan recipes, every night we offer a Chef Suggestion designed to be appropriate to the season and composed to show off the finest local ingredients combined with wine tasting of the best selections from our wine cellar. Each course is matched with its perfect glass of wine, so that wine and food complement each other perfectly.

A passion for wine makes you curious and pushes you to discover and taste new things . Mario started several years ago with a very limited collection, less than 10 labels, then driven by that passion we have expanded and improved the cellar making it the point of reference for Brunello lovers and a gem on Tuscan restaurants.
Today, even after building a new wine cellar, there is still not enough room and it seems that the wine list does not have enough pages to include everything . You can also consult our 'Carta dei Vini'.
