Volterra

History has left in Volterra its mark with continuity from the Etruscan period until the 18th century, with art and monuments of great importance, which can be admired simply walking through the streets of the historic center, but also visiting the city museums.

The undisputed historical tradition joins the beautiful nature that offers, from the landscape to the vegetation and fauna, an imposing patrimony.

The city, famous for the extraction and processing of alabaster, has a remarkable historical center of Etruscan origin (of this era remains the Gate Arch, beautifully preserved; the Porta Diana, who keeps the blocks of the jambs; most the walls built with cyclopean blocks of local stone, the Acropolis, where there are the foundations of two temples, several buildings and a few tanks, numerous tombs used for the burial of the dead), with Roman ruins (among all the theater with hemicycle) and medieval buildings like the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and Palazzo dei Priori on the square, the nerve center of the town.

Volterra is also famous for the regional gastronomical specialities and for the warm hospitality offered to visitors. Many hotels, farm houses and holiday apartments are available to tourists along with a well-equipped campsite and a modern youth hostel.
