Montepulciano

The particular location on the ridge between Val di Chiana and Val d 'Orcia has marked the history of the town of Montepulciano, also for its urban design.
The City of Montepulciano has about 15,000 inhabitants, one third of them live in the capital and covers an area of ​​165 sq km; so it’s the largest municipality in the surrounding countryside.


It stands on a hill 605 meters above sea level and it can control the valleys and areas of the town; the landscape is made even more enjoyable by olive groves and vineyards and many natural aspects of the area as the chalky hills and cypresses that shape the landscape vertically. The territory of Montepulciano, is known for its wine, Nobile di Montepulciano; It is one of most ancient red wines in Italy and it’s under the Controlled and Guaranteed Origin Denomination rule (DOCG).


From the Tower of the Renaissance Palace of the City one can see the Sibillini and the Cimone and exceptionally with clear weather the Gran Sasso of Italy in Abruzzo. Montepulciano iswithin easy reach the Val d'Orcia (Montalcino, Pienza, San Quirico, Bagno Vignoni), Amiata, Umbria and Lazio.


Montepulciano is rich in monuments of the Renaissance among which the most important are the Cathedral, built between 1592 and 1630 by Scalza and the sixteenth-century Palazzo Comunale Palazzo Tarugi.You must visit the Church of the Madonna di San Biagio, placed below the walls of the village, which was built entirely of white travertine by Antonio da Sangallo, between 1518 and 1534 and finally the Church of St. Augustine which has a majestic portal carved.
