Castellina in Chianti

Situated along the Chiantigiana Road, which reaches Siena from Florence, it is among the main destinations of Chianti.

With an Etruscan origin Castellina in Chianti passed under the dominion of Florence in the 12th century, and became an important outpost due to its strategic position along the road between Florence and Siena.

It was destroyed and rebuilt several times with stronger fortifications each time it was done because of fights between the two cities. It is said that Brunelleschi had been called for the design of part of the fortifications. As proof of this, the ancient medieval fortress; in historical memory even more remote,we find the Etruscan settlements of a considerable importance.

From Castellina you can go down to the Elsa Valley, and arrive to San Gimignano (beautiful towers), or some other way to meet Monteriggioni (the Circle of Dante) and arrive in a short time to Siena. By another road instead, we can go to Radda in Chianti and after arrive to Florence.
