Production and area history
The Greco di Tufo production area: entire territory of the municipalities of Tufo, Altavilla Irpina, Chianche, Montefusco, Prata di Principato Ultra, Petruro Irpino, Santa Paolina and Torrioni, in the province of Avellino.
The role of Irpinia in the history of viticulture bell was so substantial that the Avellino Sant'Antonio Rocchetta railway line was given the name of "Wine Railway".
Completely surrounded by vineyards, the province of Avellino offers wines of international fame as the Greco di Tufo, Taurasi and Fiano.
The oldest vine from the avellinese is undoubtedly the Greco di Tufo, from which we get the wines, imported from the Greek region of Thessaly, by Pelagi.
Confirmation millennial origin of this vine is given by the discovery in Pompeii of a fresco dating back to the first century BC where it explicitly mentions the "Greek wine". The cultivation of the Greco grape variety was widespread at the beginning on the slopes of Vesuvius and then in other areas in the province of Avellino, where he took the name of Greco di Tufo.
