Morellino di Scansano

The production area of ​​Morellino di Scansano includes the hilly area of ​​the province of Grosseto, between the rivers Ombrone and Albegna, all the Scansanoterritory and part of Campagnatico, Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano, Roccalbegna and Semproniano. The soil is particularly varied although it is largely characterized by a series of sedimentary rocks (flysch), mostly composed by scaly clay of Pliocene origin, a rich soil of crushed stone.

Morellino di Scansano is produced with at least 85% Sangiovese. Morellino is usually manufactured using stainless steel tanks, while the Morellino di ScansanoRiservaneeds a minimum age of two years, at least one year must be in oak barrels. Usually, Morellino di Scansano is a fruity red wine, characterized by a medium body and nice balance on the palate with a long finish. Due to its structure and its balance is very versatile in the food and wine pairings and offers at the same time a well-defined character and elegance. Morellino di ScansanoRiserva is more structured, because of the aging in wooden barrels.


The features are:



  • color: red ruby ​​to garnet with aging.

  • smell: vinous, with age, fragrant, ethereal, intense, pleasant, fine.

  • taste: dry, austere, warm, slightly tannic.


PRODUCTION

Wine Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin "Morellino di Scansano" also reserve type, must be made from grapes from vineyards compounds, within the company, from the following varieties:

Sangiovese: at least 85%.

They can be used to produce these wines other red grapes, non-aromatic, suitable for cultivation in the Tuscany region, up to a maximum of 15%.


WINE PROCESS

The grapes for wine-making must ensure the wine "Morellino di Scansano" and "Morellino di ScansanoRiserva" a title alcohol by natural volume minimum of 12.00% vol. The denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin "Morellino di Scansano", if intended to type 'Reserve', must be subjected to an aging period of not less than two years, of which at least one in wooden barrels. The aging period begins on January 1th following the year in which the grapes were grown.


BOTTLING

Unlike the prediction of the Disciplinary DOC, bottling becomes mandatory in the production area of ​​grapes, without prejudice to the rights acquired by companies that have historically bottled Morellino di Scansano out of that area before switching to DOCG (2007).


MARKETING

The wines must be released for consumption in glass containers of the type "Bordeaux." On bottles and other containers where the wines with denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin "Morellino di Scansano" and "Morellino di ScansanoRiserva must be written the year in which grapes were grown.
